I dedicate this blog post to 17 years old students or students who have 1 more year left of high school.
You are entitled to do whatever you feel is best for you in your life. Having said that, I feel as if I can take a huge load of stress if you’re plan is to go to college. I want to describe a bit of my life around the age of 17. I believe if you learn from my experience you can have a pleasent expierence compared to what I lived.
Deciding what you’re going to do with the rest of your life can be scary. It can also take a toll on your mental health. There’s a lot of pressure on young kids to go to college as it will provide a better salary, job prospects and a stable future. This is what we are taught in school and by the mainstream media. At 27 years old I am here to tell you this is not the complete truth.
You can learn my point of view having been accepted to UNAM and attempting to study at UC Berkeley.

I remember when I was 17 it was hard to really figure out what I wanted to do with my life. If you have trouble being yourself my advice wont be of much help. What my collegues were doing is having a bit of knowledge about their careers. A lot of them going for the money and job stability, only to complain when they were finally accepted into their best choice.
If I were that age again the first step I would do is to finish high school strong. Ignore what everybody else is doing. I gave to much importance to people who I thought were my friends. I have lost total connection with them and I would have such a better high school experience if I would’ve just focused on studying. You are not preparing to gain real education.
You are preparing yourself to be a consumer. After all, thats what college is for the most part. You have to figure out what’s useful and practical.
I can tell you from experience is better to find a decent job and get an education around this. A job will give you experience which will come in handy when you are trying to obtain other jobs. If you can find a decent job, you will notice that certain things are not talked about out loud but they are understood. I work in retail, a lot of managers and coworkers don’t speak too much about the subject but there’s a lot of finance, customer service, product knowledge, logistics and time management involved.
I feel as if you are making a big mistake going straight to college after high school since Mexico offers little support. I have heard of scholarships but it’s often said they are a lot of work and I believe you become more mature by valuing your money and then pursuing your education if thats a path you choose to take. Education does not only mean sitting in a classroom listening to a teacher. You can read books on your spare time, watch videos on Youtube for technical things.
The future generation should have an open mind when graduating college. As opposed to my friends who had faith in the system. You are hoping college brings you a certain salary or dream job that doesn’t exist. As Steve Jobs once said “I’m not dismissing the value of higher education; I’m simply saying it comes at the expense of experience.”
